14 Nov 2008 From: Olga Weisfeiler Cc: Lev Weisfeiler Dear Predrag, I have a question: if you lately looked at Boris' list of publications posted on my web site then you may know about recently found unpublished Boris' manuscript. (below) I want to post this Boris' work into arXiv, and, later on, possible to find where to publish it. To do that, as I was told, it need to be TeX-ed. Someone promised to do TeX-ing a year ago. Since then I heard nothing beside of vague promises. I need to find some one else who would agree to do such work, preferably for free. Can you help me with that and find such nice capable person who will do TeX-ing? Thank you again. Olga << Unfinished and unpublished manuscripts Boris Weisfeiler announced his results on finite linear groups in August 1984 [item 35 above]. Soon after, in January 1985, he disappeared during a hiking trip in Chile. He left two near-complete manuscripts. Parts of one of them, entitled On the size and structure of finite linear groups, became privately available to the people who are well known to be the experts in the field with intention to publish this last fundamental work of Weisfeiler. The results presented in this manuscript were later discussed by Walter Feit [Weisfeiler's work on finite linear groups, Abstracts of Papers Presented to the AMS, 1994, #897-20-299] and Michael Collins [On Jordan's theorem for complex linear groups, J. Group Theory 10 (2007), 411-423; Bounds for finite primitive complex linear groups, J. Algebra 319 (2008), 759-776; Modular analogues of Jordan's theorem for finite linear groups, arXiv:0709.3245, to appear in J. Reine Angew. Math.]. Weisfeiler's manuscripts were never published before. 38. On the size and structure of finite linear groups, 1984.
